The Gladney Family - Endowment History

The Gladney Endowment

The Gladney Endowment fund was established in an effort to assist a graduating Louisiana medical student entering a Louisiana Family Practice Residency program. The Gladney Endowment is a scholarship fund established by the friends and family of the Gladney Family of Claiborne Parish and North Louisiana AHEC.  The Endowment is supported through private donations and memorials.  The interest from the Endowment provides income for student scholarships annually.

For more than 100 years members of the physicians in the Galdney Family have served the community of Claiborne Parish and northwest Louisiana. Dr. James F. Gladney, Sr. was born and raised in Homer, LA. He attended Tulane Medical School and established a medical practice in Homer with his younger brother, John Gladney MD. The practice was forced to close in 1929 when Dr. James Gladney Sr. contracted tuberculosis. However, his sons, James Jr. and Pat, would later continue his work.

James F. Gladney, Jr. MD received his medical training at Tulane University and first practiced in the U.S. Army. He settled in Homer, LA in 1947 where he remained in private practice until 1986. In 1986, he was named Louisiana Outstanding Family Physician and was named runner-up for the National Family Physician Award in 1987. James F. Gladney Jr, MD was the founding president of North Louisiana AHEC. Dr. James passed away in 2008.

W.P. "Pat" Gladney, MD attended LSU Medical School in New Orleans. After serving in the U.S. Army, he returned to Homer and practiced medicine until his retirement in 1987. Dr. Pat still resides in Homer, LA.

Both Dr. James and Dr. Pat were pioneers in rural medical education and started providing clinical training and observation for LSU MedicalSchool - Shreveport medical students in the 1970s. Medical students and residents were provided opportunities to learn first hand about the rewards and challenges of rural medicine.

These physicians were instrumental in the development of rural clinical training for medical students in North Louisiana, as well as providing quality healthcare to the residents of Claiborne Parish and northwest Louisiana. Their efforts have been a significant influence in the success and growth of rural physician recruitment in Louisiana.

Dr. James Jr's son and son-in-law have continued the family tradition as dedicated physicians in northwest Louisiana. John D. Gladney MD is a general surgeon practicing in Shreveport and Homer.  Samuel K. Abshire MD is a family medicine doctor practicing in Claiborne Parish and his spouse, Camille Gladney Abshire RN, reside in Homer.

An Endowment Award is presented annually and the Fund is administered by NLAHEC under the direction of the Gladney Endowment Committee.
