Rural Scholars
Rural Scholars is a program developed to encourage students interested in rural medicine and medical school.
The program is sponsored by LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport, AHEC Program Office and North Louisiana AHEC. WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU? The program provides students with:
- A foot into the door of LSU Health Science Center
- The opportunity to gain access to health career experiences and key LSU Health Science Center faculty
- A better
understanding of the medical school application process and what it takes to make it once you are in
- Guest lectures, developmental workshops and retreats as well as hands-on activities
- Monthly or quarterly activities and gifts throughout the 2 year program
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO? Requirements: - Must be a former NLAHEC student OR from a city in Louisiana with a population of less than 20,000
- College sophomore or junior at an accredited University
- Must demonstrate an interest in medical school and health careers in a rural setting
- Complete application which includes copy of official ACT score & high school transcript
Students are chosen for this unique opportunity because of their academic success, their connection with NLAHEC, and their interest in applying to medical school. It is a prestigious achievement. To see photos from 2008 "Rural Scholars retreat" click here
